New to Voiceover?

When I started voice acting, I had a friend who said, “Take my class this weekend.”

I did. And it changed my world. As I sat there, totally excited to get back into acting after the birth of my kid, I realized, “Wait!! We do this from HOME??? I can be an actor, at a professional level, FROM HOME??? AND BE WITH MY KID???” I knew I did not want to do eight shows a week at a musical theatre house while raising a kid.

And that’s how it started for me. I took a class, then did some private coaching. And… posted an audition on an audiobook site… landed 5 books. Frankly, I landed them too soon. My husband put together a home studio. It helps he’s a stage contractor and works at 5th Ave Theatre. My friend is a sound engineer and he edited my first book and then taught me to edit.

THEN, I got more training in audiobook narration, voiceover, all of it. Did my first demos. That first year I got my first agent, about twenty or so gigs. A decade later, I have multiple agents, an animation series, a handful of great video games, and a lot of corporate, business, eLearning voiceover work in my portfolio. Redid my first demos a few years later. Huge improvement in my skills.

A decade plus in, I still hone my skills weekly in VO workouts. I still work with coaches. I am always working on my craft. My roadmap was STUDY, WORK, STUDY MORE, WORK MORE, and just don’t quit.
